âSARAH, IâM SORRY.â
âI know.â
âI didnât. I mean, I didnât know that Libbyâ¦â
âI know.â
âSounds like Mother saw her and decided sheâd be a good match for me. She set Libby up. She set me up. I didnât mean to set you and Macon up, but thatâs what happened.â
âYou handled it beautifully,â Sarah said serenely, âas you always handle everything. You even said you were sorry, which isnât easy for men, I know. It was your motherâs doing, as you said, and therein lies the problem. But canât we just forget it for tonight?â
They stood together in her living room. Of course, Alex wouldnât have said a word about the disastrous evening until they were in private. Too dangerous. She might make a scene, for heavenâs sake.
He stared at her blankly. âForget about it?â
âThat would be my preference.â
âYou donât want to have a fight? Clear the air? Tell me how I took you out to dinner with a woman who flirted with me? Hit on me?â
âShe did?â She could see from the expression on Alexâs face that he wished he hadnât admitted the bit about Libbyâs hand on his knee, and this amused her, made her want to tease him. Sarah had noticed at once, could tell from the angle of Libbyâs arm. It was Alex whoâd been offended by the evening. She was justâ¦just finding it easier to keep Alex in the place sheâd assigned to himâher lover for the long, hot summer ahead, a satisfied client, an expendable man just like all the other men whoâd played cameo roles in her life.
Already she could feel her blood heating up for what she really wanted from Alex, all she wanted from Alex. She gave him a languid smile and laced her fingers together behind his nape, feeling the silken heft of his hair tease her skin, feeling his body tense up. âI canât fight when itâs so cool in here,â she said. âEarlier, on the sidewalk outside the restaurant in the heat, I might have been feeling a little scrappy, but not now.â She moved closer, blew a kiss into his ear, pressed her breasts against his chest.
He groaned. âSarah, what do you want?â
He meant something larger and more important, but she chose to interpret it her own way. âYou know what I want, and you know just how to give it to me.â
His voice hoarsened. He was giving up, giving in, going to play it her way. âWhat would you like first?â His arms slid around her waist and pulled her closer.
âWell,â she said, pretending to think about it, âI really do think you should examine my entire body for skin damage due to excessive exposure to water.â
âPruniness.â
âExactly.â
His fingertips went to the zipper that ran down the back of her dress and slid it down an inch. âI may have to ask you to disrobe to do a thorough examination.â
âIf you must,â she sighed, moving sinuously against him, âyou must.â
His mouth moved across her cheek to her ear, where he nibbled at the lobe for a moment before sliding down to her throat.
